What to expect at your visit


Our reception staff will greet you when you arrive and help you check-in. Your appointment will last between 2 and 4 hours as we may conduct many tests during your visit. This will help us determine the health of your eye and provide treatment options.

Your medical evaluation will begin with an ophthalmic technician who will talk with you in order to get a more detailed medical and ocular history. You will be questioned regarding your visual symptoms and the treatments you have received. The technician will then place drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils. Your pupils will require up to 30 minutes to dilate.

After your pupils are dilated, your doctor will meet with you to examine your eyes. Depending on your medical condition, other specific tests may be performed. If treatment of your eye problem is indicated, you and your doctor will decide the most appropriate course of action. Some types of treatment can be performed in our office and others require an operation in a surgery center.

If you are not able to come to your scheduled appointment, please call our office at 701-293-9829. New patients who miss their scheduled appointment without prior notification to our office will incur a $50.00 charge for every three missed appointments. Thank you.

  • A retinal exam is a more extensive eye exam than you have at your regular eye doctor's office. Conducting a thorough examination is a lengthy process. As a result, we are unable to determine the exact length of your clinic visit in advance. Please plan on being in the clinic for 2 to 4 hours if you are undergoing an examination.

  • You will meet with a member of our clinical team prior to seeing your doctor who will get you ready for your exam. Your eyes will be dilated and you may undergo diagnostic testing, such as photographs or an OCT. After your assessment with a clinical team member, your doctor will see you for examination, consultation and treatment options. If specialized testing or treatment is required, we will strive to finish these tests or treatments at your visit. Please be aware there will be a wait time between each segment of your visit.

  • Yes. To perform a thorough exam, both of your eyes will be dilated so your physician can see the retina at the back of the eye. After the drops are administered, it takes approximately 30 minutes for dilation to occur.

  • New patients:

    • The new patient registration form that you have completed

    • The medical history form that you have completed listing your medications, allergies, and surgical history

    • The new patient Financial Policy and Recording Policy that you have reviewed and signed

    • Your medical insurance cards (we do not accept vision insurance)

    • Your eyeglasses

    • A pair of sunglasses

    • A driver as both of your eyes will be dilated and you may undergo a procedure

    Returning patients:

    • Your medical insurance cards

    • A pair of sunglasses

    • A driver as both of your eyes will be dilated and you may undergo a procedure

  • We recommend you have someone accompany you who can drive you home after your appointment. Both of your eyes will be dilated which lasts approximately 3 to 4 hours. If you undergo an in-office procedure, a driver is required.

  • There are wheelchairs on site which are available on a first come, first served basis. Please be aware if you need physical assistance with transferring and personal cares, we require someone to accompany you to your appointment who can assist you. This person must remain with you throughout the duration of your visit.

  • Please visit our Insurance page to learn more about which insurances policies are accepted. Some insurance companies require a referral to our practice. Please review your insurance benefits prior to your appointment and obtain any necessary referral. If your plan has a co-payment, we will ask for payment when you check in for your appointment. For commercial insurance plans, the amount of the co-pay is usually listed on the front of your insurance card.

  • If you have a medical power of attorney and are unable to sign your own consent forms, your power of attorney must accompany you to your appointment or be immediately available by phone.
